Today’s Baby Boomers popularized the idea of visiting a dozen countries on a shoestring during the 1960’s and ‘70s. But these days, many are returning to concentrate on one country or area, with more in-depth explorations of historical sites, cuisine, scenery and shopping opportunities, according to the United States Tour Operators Association (USTOA).

In a recent survey of USTOA members, 71% cite Boomers as the hottest growing demographic group for independent vacations, while nearly 48% say that Boomers are the hottest growing demographic group for tours. “These former backpackers now favor travel packages created by professional tour operators who do all the planning, and leave the enjoyment to them,” notes Bob Whitley, USTOA president. “In fact, we are seeing a growing number of tour operators designing vacation packages and tours specifically tailored for Baby Boomers,” adds Whitley.

Below is a sampling of offerings. All prices are per person, double occupancy.

Communing with Greek Gods. Baby boomers can focus on an ancient world of Greek history, art, and culture, plus a taste of Turkey on a two-week “Grecian Spirit” independent package. Valid through October 15, 2004, the itinerary features daily breakfast, 3 nights in Athens with a guided city tour, a 4-day guided Classical Tour by air conditioned motor coach to Delphi, Nauplia, and Olympia; an Island stay on Mykonos in a Superior First Class hotel; and a 4-day cruise of the Greek Islands and Turkey with all meals while cruising. The locally hosted tour is offered through November 2004, and includes airfare, a full day of wild game viewing from an open vehicle in Kruger National Park (home to 507 species of birds, 147 different mammals, 336 species of trees, and more). The tour also features a half day Cape Town City and Table Mountain Tour, plus a half day “Walk to Freedom” tour of Cape Town’s cultural and historical sites. Included are 8 nights moderate hotel accommodations with breakfast daily, plus 1_ days free for individual pursuits. You can give in to your inner adolescent and explore Spain by motorcycle on an “Andalusia by Harley-Davidson” self-guided 8-day, 7-night program, available throughout the year. After an orientation, you’ll pilot a new Harley along country roads to Lake Vinuela and the Axarquia region with its charming hilltop villages. The itinerary also visits Granada, Moorish ruins at Alcala de Real, Cordoba, natural parks including one famous for its cork trees; the monastery of Cazalla de la Sierra; the sherry-making center of Jerez; a 15th century castle at Arcos de la Frontera; and the seaside resort of Marbella. You’ll also motorbike across a mountain pass at 4,600 ft. to reach the dramatic town of Ronda with a steep gorge dividing its medieval and modern quarters.

Included are 1 night each in the Fitzpatrick Hotel Bunratty, Faithlegg House – a luxurious manor home in Waterford - and a 5-star castle (either Dromoland or Ashford); plus 2 nights at the first class Hotel Killarney, and the 5-star Jury’s Ballsbridge Hotel in Dublin.
