My guide led me off the beaten path to the Brazil and Yungay neighborhoods to admire the 1940\u2019s mansions and stop at La Peluquer\u00eda Francesa, a barbershop established in 1925 that still offers men an old fashioned shave with a hot towel.\u00a0 We then grabbed a coffee in the restaurant next door, which serves double duty as an eclectic antique shop.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1111\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1111\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ustoa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Old-Vines-at-Neyen.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-1111\" alt=\"Old Vines at Neyen Winery\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Old Vines at Neyen Winery<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Wine Regions surrounding Santiago are an idyllic next stop, and the next day I went straight to the Colchagua Valley.\u00a0 I arrived at Neyen Winery for a tour and tasting, and to see the old vines that, planted in 1889, are rooted so deeply they do not need to be watered. \u00a0That evening I had the fantastic good fortune of staying at Lapostolle Residence with just four luxury casitas overlooking the valley and a breathtaking view of the Andes Mountains.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1112\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1112\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ustoa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/View-at-Lapostolle.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-1112\" alt=\"Gorgeous Views at Lapostolle Residence\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Gorgeous Views at Lapostolle Residence<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I could not stay for long, however, and the next day I was off to the old port city of Valparaiso.\u00a0 Wandering through the colorful streets of this unusual city I was impressed with the intricate murals and stylistic graffiti at almost every turn. \u00a0My guide introduced me to some of the friendly local artists of the neighborhood who were happy to share their craft and talk about this romantic city, beloved as well by the Noble Prize Winning poet Pablo Neruda himself. \u00a0Casa Higueras, a beautiful boutique hotel in a historic mansion overlooking the harbor was my comfortable home for the evening and I enjoyed a cup of tea up on the rooftop.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1113\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1113\" style=\"width: 768px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ustoa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Charter-flight.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-1113\" alt=\"Charter Flight to Castro on Chiloe Island\" src=\"https:\/\/ustoa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Charter-flight-768x1024.jpg\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1113\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Charter Flight to Castro on Chiloe Island<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>My next destination was the archipelago of Chiloe, and as I boarded the plane I was not sure what to expect.\u00a0 Landing in Puerto Montt, I had a short charter flight to the town of Castro on Chiloe Island.\u00a0 The pilot asked if we would like to fly low for views of the water and small habited islands along the way.\u00a0 Of course we did!\u00a0 From above I realized how enormous the archipelago is, although it seems so small on the map.\u00a0 Landing in Chiloe I was immediately charmed.\u00a0 The landscape is stunning, green with rolling hills and grazing sheep and the calm ocean. I met my guide, Cyril, a warm and friendly man who I soon learned is as knowledgeable as he is passionate about the island.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1114\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1114\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ustoa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/View-from-Centro-de-Ocio.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-1114\" alt=\"The view from Hotel Centro de Ocio\" src=\"https:\/\/ustoa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/View-from-Centro-de-Ocio-1024x768.jpg\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ustoa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/View-from-Centro-de-Ocio-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ustoa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/View-from-Centro-de-Ocio-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ustoa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/View-from-Centro-de-Ocio-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ustoa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/View-from-Centro-de-Ocio-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/ustoa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/View-from-Centro-de-Ocio.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1114\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The view from Hotel Centro de Ocio<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I never wanted to leave Hotel Centro de Ocio, one of the coziest properties I have ever visited with gorgeous views over the bay. This was my home base as Cyril and I explored the island together visiting local organic farmers, hiking in exotic rainforests, sea kayaking in the bay and horseback riding with an authentic gaucho. There are 16 UNESCO churches on the island, built without metal hardware by the Jesuits in the 17<sup>th<\/sup> and 18<sup>th<\/sup> centuries. \u00a0\u00a0I tasted homemade apple cider on a local farm and steamy empanadas from a local roadside stand.\u00a0 The ultimate delight was the local \u201cCuranto\u201d a traditional local barbeque with lamb, chicken, seafood and vegetables prepared in a fire in a pit oven, in the center of the floor of the family dining room of the original homestead that is now managed and preserved by Centro de Ocio.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1115\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1115\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ustoa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Chiloe-Island.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-1115\" alt=\"Stunning Views in Chiloe Island\" src=\"https:\/\/ustoa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Chiloe-Island-1024x768.jpg\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ustoa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Chiloe-Island-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ustoa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Chiloe-Island-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ustoa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Chiloe-Island-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ustoa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Chiloe-Island-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/ustoa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Chiloe-Island.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1115\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Stunning Views in Chiloe Island<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After every journey to Chile I return with new experiences and ready to help our clients plan a customized journey, whether they are looking to visit the iconic sites like the Atacama Desert and Patagonia or to veer off the beaten path and discover a place like Chiloe.<\/p>\n<p><i>Interested in learning more about Rebecca\u2019s journey to Chile?
