I stood on the deck of <i>Ocean Adventurer<\/i> as it sailed into Krossfjord, a 30-km long fjord on the west coast of\u00a0Spitsbergen in Norway\u2019s Svalbard archipelago. Most of my fellow passengers were at breakfast so I had the deck to myself, with my camera at the ready, my eyes peeled on the horizon for my first glimpse of Lillieh\u00f6\u00f6k Glacier, and my ears alert for the signature thunder of glacier calving.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ustoa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/USTOA-Blog1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2734\" alt=\"USTOA Blog1\" src=\"https:\/\/ustoa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/USTOA-Blog1.jpg\" width=\"1000\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ustoa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/USTOA-Blog1.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/ustoa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/USTOA-Blog1-300x240.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ustoa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/USTOA-Blog1-768x614.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In the midst of all that anticipation of nature\u2019s drama unfolding before me, I was suddenly overcome with a sense of quiet, a stillness that brought with it a razor-sharp clarity of my surroundings. \u00a0My mind began to run through an inventory of every stunning image I had experienced in the days leading up to this moment: the sculpted icebergs, the expansive glaciers, the snow-capped mountains, the long-abandoned historic sites, the polar bears prowling along the ice edge, the reindeers that cantered past me when I was on a shore landing, the walruses that gazed at me as I kayaked 30 metres away, of the whales spotted from the ship, and of cliff-tops covered in thousands of nesting Brunnich&#8217;s guillemots.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ustoa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/USTOA-Blog2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2735\" alt=\"USTOA Blog2\" src=\"https:\/\/ustoa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/USTOA-Blog2.jpg\" width=\"1000\" height=\"666\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ustoa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/USTOA-Blog2.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/ustoa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/USTOA-Blog2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ustoa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/USTOA-Blog2-768x511.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And in my private polar epiphany, I was overcome not only with an intense appreciation for this pristine polar wilderness before me but also with a desire to protect it for every future visitor who came after me.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ustoa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/USTOA-Blog31.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2737\" alt=\"USTOA Blog3\" src=\"https:\/\/ustoa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/USTOA-Blog31.jpg\" width=\"1000\" height=\"666\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ustoa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/USTOA-Blog31.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/ustoa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/USTOA-Blog31-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ustoa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/USTOA-Blog31-768x511.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This realization was by no means unique to me\u2014it\u2019s a moment shared by many who visit the Arctic or Antarctic. Your Quark Expeditions cabin is equipped with refillable dispensers of body wash and shampoo.<\/li>\n<li><b>Don\u2019t introduce non-native species.<\/b> Pack clean gear, including clothing, footwear, and bags. Decontaminate boots before leaving and upon returning to the ship by using the provided Virkon disinfectant bath.<\/li>\n<li><b>Bring a reusable waterproof bag<\/b> to protect your camera and\/or phone from the elements. (Avoid single-use plastics at all times.)<\/li>\n<li><b>Don\u2019t dispose of waste during shore landings.<\/b> Where waste is unavoidable, bring along a reusable bag and carry the waste back onto the ship to be disposed of properly.<\/li>\n<li><b>Support local communities in the Arctic: <\/b>Purchase goods from local artisans during community visits in the Arctic, but don\u2019t purchase important goods like groceries and supplies as stock is limited and deliveries are rare.<\/li>\n<li><b>Follow the environmental and conservation guidelines<\/b> established by the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators (IAATO) and the Association of\u00a0<em><b>Arctic<\/b><\/em>\u00a0Expedition Cruise Operators (<em><b>AECO), <\/b><\/em><em>who outline strategies, policies and behaviors to protect the polar regions.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><b>Place a bid during our onboard auctions:<\/b> proceeds from our onboard auctions support polar research and conservation groups.<\/li>\n<li><b>Become a Polar Ambassador.<\/b> Talk to one of our Expeditions Team about becoming a Polar Ambassador.\u00a0 This program teaches you how to make changes to reduce your carbon footprint every day.
