Since we\u2019re talking numbers \u2013 there are\u202f<strong>more than 180,000 lakes<\/strong>\u202fin Finland. \u201cLand of 1,000 Lakes\u201d is an understatement.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ustoa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Finland-Bear-Watching-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3668\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll be happy to know that\u202f<strong>most Finns speak<\/strong>\u202f<strong>excellent English<\/strong>\u202f\u2013 because who in the world is going to learn to speak Finnish? It\u2019s a complex language completely unrelated to any other, except Estonian and Hungarian. With so many Finns speaking English \u2013 and eager to practice \u2013 it\u2019s easy for Americans to get around.\u202f Finland also has an excellent road system if you want to rent a car, as well as a great public transportation system and good air connections between destinations. Keep in mind that if you rent a car, gas is quite expensive compared to the US \u2013 \u202flike most other countries.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ustoa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Finland-Berry-picking-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3669\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Because of its extreme northern latitude, you can also experience two natural phenomena in Finland. Between October and March, when the days are short and the nights are long, you can see the\u202f<strong>Northern Lights<\/strong>\u202for aurora borealis, that spectacular kinetic light show dancing in the night sky. In the late spring through the summer, you have the wonderful long days of the\u202f<strong>Midnight Sun<\/strong>, when the darkest it gets in the middle of the night is like twilight. For two months in the far north, enjoy \u201cWhite Nights\u201d when the sun does not set at all.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ustoa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Finland-Sauna-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3666\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The only thing as sacred to Finns as being active outdoors is relaxing from all that exertion in a real\u202f<strong>Finnish sauna<\/strong>\u202f\u2013 which usually involves several dips in rivers, lakes or the sea in water that can be quite \u2013 shall we say, invigorating? In the winter, Finns cut holes in the ice to take a quick swim after a sauna. I personally am sold on saunas, and saunayoga \u2013 the best way to relax after hiking, skiing or kayaking or whatever you want to put your body through.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ustoa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Finland-Reindeer-sledding-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3667\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>For those seeking some adventure, one of my favorite places is Lapland \u2013 specifically Ruka and Kuusamo, near Oulanka National Park. When I visited in February we \u201chunted\u201d for the Northern Lights by snowshoe one evening, by a sled pulled by huskies the next.\u202f During the day, we went cross country skiing, and successfully tried ice fishing.\u202f On a subsequent trip during June, there were so many things to do: we canoed, went whitewater rafting, rode fat-tire bikes on forest trails, fished for brown trout in a nearby river, patiently watched for bears, and picked wild berries \u2013 blueberries, lingonberries and&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ah \u2013 heaven.
