Beyond the Safari: How Community-Based Tourism Is Shaping Rwanda’s Travel Story

By Visit Rwanda, the official destination marketing organization for Rwanda, working with tourism partners and communities to showcase the country’s landscapes, culture, conservation, and people to travelers around the world. Visit Rwanda is a proud sponsor of the 2026 USTOA Future Lights of the Tour Industry.

In Rwanda, some of the most meaningful travel experiences begin long after the wildlife encounter ends.

They might start with a conversation over a shared meal, a walk through a village guided by someone who has called the area home for generations, or an afternoon learning how traditional crafts are made. These experiences offer travelers something increasingly valuable: the opportunity to see a destination through the eyes of the people who live there.

Community-based tourism has become an important part of Rwanda’s tourism story, connecting conservation and travel with local livelihoods. The philosophy is relatively simple: when communities benefit from tourism, they have a greater stake in protecting the places and traditions that make their home unique.

Nowhere is this connection more visible than around Rwanda’s protected areas. Revenue generated through tourism has supported community development initiatives, including schools, health centers, water infrastructure, and other local projects. Around Volcanoes National Park, for example, community-focused initiatives have helped create opportunities for residents living alongside one of the world’s most celebrated mountain gorilla habitats.

But community tourism in Rwanda extends well beyond conservation.

Across the country, travelers can encounter experiences rooted in everyday life and local knowledge. In rural communities, visitors may learn traditional agricultural practices, explore local food traditions or discover the craftsmanship behind Rwandan basketry and textiles. Rather than simply observing, travelers are invited to participate — creating an exchange that feels personal and often continues well beyond the experience itself.

There is also an important human element to these encounters. A community guide is not simply leading a traveler from one point to another; they are sharing their own connection to the landscape. A craftsperson is not demonstrating a cultural tradition for a visitor in isolation; they are helping sustain a skill that has been passed between generations. A meal becomes more than something on a plate when its ingredients, preparation and stories are connected to the community that produced them.

This model reflects a broader shift in how travelers are thinking about responsible tourism. Increasingly, the question is not only How can I experience this place? but also What does my presence contribute to it?

Rwanda offers one answer: travel can be a two-way exchange.

The country’s community-based tourism initiatives demonstrate that meaningful travel does not have to be separated from conservation or local economic opportunity. In fact, the three can reinforce one another. When visitors slow down, listen and engage with local communities, they often leave with a deeper understanding of Rwanda — one that goes beyond its extraordinary landscapes and wildlife.

Perhaps that is the most memorable souvenir of all: not simply having visited Rwanda, but having connected with the people who call it home.

Preserving the Past for the Next Traveler: How Tourism Helps Protect Cultural Heritage

By Tess St. John, Tauck

There’s a certain satisfaction in visiting somewhere new – especially places that feel relatively untouched. A national park at sunrise. An underwater coral garden, quietly teeming with life. A stretch of beach where the horizon feels endless, waves crashing on the shore with a soft hush. These are the kinds of places that make you want to bring something home, something physical to hold onto the memory.

For me, it’s always a rock or a shell, something glinting in the sand or smooth enough to skip across a glasslike lake.

But once I bring it home, it never holds the same spark it did when I first found it.

A destination is never just its land — it is every form of life that fills it. Photo courtesy of Tauck.

Maybe it’s the lighting. Maybe it’s the absence of wind or water or context. Or maybe it’s something simpler: once removed from its origin, it feels out of place, as if I pulled it from its own home. What felt like a small, harmless keepsake begins to feel like something taken.

I can’t help but be reminded of Theodore Roosevelt standing at the edge of the Grand Canyon, urging future generations to “leave it as it is,” every time that realization hits. His words weren’t just about land – they were about restraint, about understanding that some things hold their meaning precisely because they remain where they are.

And preservation, I’ve come to realize, extends far beyond the landscapes we’ve fought to protect.

Preserving tradition, one thread at a time. Photo courtesy of Tauck.

It lives in the people we meet along the way – the lacemakers in Venice shaping traditions passed down through generations; the local guides who carry histories not found in textbooks, in Petra’s rose-colored corridors where ancient stone wears quietly under modern footsteps; the communities whose identities are woven into the places we visit, whether one state over or an ocean away. A destination is never just its land; it is everything that fills it, sustains it, and gives it a voice.

A place is not just what we see during peak seasons. There are kids walking to school, mothers walking miles for water on the same roads we take off-road jeep rides on – daily motions that exist long before we arrive and long after we leave.

Often, we step into the frame of a destination without ever seeing the full picture. What we experience is only a fraction, a moment shaped for us to pass through.

Cultural traditions in Botswana preserved through storytelling, ritual, and daily life. Photo courtesy of Tauck.

Our footprints fall on paths long established by others, and it’s up to us to move through them without shifting their course. These rhythms hold stories, traditions, and ways of life that don’t pause for our arrival.

But it’s not all cautionary. We’re wired to explore, to connect, to step into lives beyond our own. And when done thoughtfully, travel has the power to build up the very communities we visit.

Connection and culture shared across the table in Jordan’s Wadi Rum. Photo courtesy of Tauck.

It can look like choosing to shop locally supporting a seventh-generation winemaker in whose craft is as much inheritance as it is livelihood. It can mean contributing to the restoration of centuries-old landmarks and cultural sites, or sitting with a local family over a shared meal, where stories are passed across the table and culture is preserved not in monuments, but in memory.

Ancient pathways in Petra shaped by centuries of history and modern footsteps alike. Photo courtesy of Tauck.

In these small, intentional choices, tourism becomes less about taking and more about giving back.

At the end of the day, I don’t need the rock to remember the place. What stays with me are the stories – the subtle shifts in perspective that make the world feel both wider and more connected. It’s learning how to belong without taking from what was never ours to begin with – and leaving it whole for the next traveler.

Lessons from Anchorage: 5 Years of SIR and a Growing Commitment to Responsible Tourism

By Molly Lacob, USTOA Global Social Impact Manager

Each year after returning from the annual Sustainability is Responsibility (SIR) summit, there is a sense of momentum amongst the USTOA community that reminds us why we fell in love with Travel and Tourism in the first place – the willingness to collaborate for the betterment of people and places. Our time in Anchorage, Alaska for the 2026 SIR Summit was a wonderful example of partnership in practice. Throughout the summit, Indigenous leaders, business owners, policy advocates, and sustainability champions came together to explore vital questions: How do we grow without exploiting? How do people, places, and policy work together? We heard from those working to protect wildlife habitat, manage visitor pressure, and ensure that tourism strengthens—not overwhelm—the communities that call Alaska home. What stood out most was the shared belief that successful tourism isn’t measured solely by visitor numbers, but by the long-term benefits it creates for residents, businesses, and the environment.

The rapidly evolving world of responsible tourism inspires us to create the summits around the current focuses of our members, meaning each summit will look different. Gina Bang, from Avanti Destinations explains how this evolution has assisted their sustainability strategy. “SIR transformed how I think about my company’s role in this industry. We started asking “What does sustainability mean to us?” After five summits, we’re asking “How do we embed these principles into everything we do?” That’s the shift SIR creates—from awareness to action, from individual effort to collective movement.”

The introduction of SIR Working Groups brought together a new range of expertise from members, local environmental advocates in Alaska, and our facilitator, Graham Miller. The working groups, divided into focus areas surrounding overtourism, climate risk, aviation, and carbon calculators, inspired in-depth discussions regarding the future of our industry, while simultaneously listening to ongoing case studies from locals working towards a better future for Travel and Tourism in Alaska.

Julia Cope from USTOA’s newest Active Member Backroads, arrived at the summit as a member of the Climate Risk Working Group, yet left eager to follow along the progress of the remining three working groups, as they all offer guidance for her upcoming goals. “As a first time SIR summit attendee, I can confidently say that the 2026 SIR summit was a pinnacle professional experience in my career to date. Working in small groups with brilliant, experienced minds at the niche intersection of travel and sustainability and reaching actionable outcomes towards solutions for some of the greatest community and environmental challenges we face as an industry, all while surrounded by the beauty of Alaska’s Chugach mountains, was surreal.”

USTOA SIR Summit Attendees exploring a temperate rainforest beach on their Prince William Sound glacier tour

While there is a consensus that progress has been made over the last five years, the SIR Community’s momentum only continues to grow, inspiring many to return year after year to evolve alongside their fellow USTOA members. Our time in Anchorage taught us how intentionally they are thinking about the future of tourism while balancing visitor growth with community wellbeing, cultural preservation, and environmental stewardship – all while navigating a complex policy environment.

Kelly P. Sahner from The Sahner Group shared “Attending my 5th USTOA Sustainability Is Responsibility (SIR) event was truly special. A heartfelt thank you to Alaska for hosting us and to Graham Miller for once again delivering such thought-provoking insights and education. There is something genuinely energizing about being in a room full of people who share a deep commitment to sustainability and the future of travel not because they have to be there, but because they believe in it. That passion is palpable, and it’s contagious. Sustainability is not just important to our industry, it is essential to its future. What USTOA has built with SIR is remarkable: a platform that not only champions this cause but actively supports travel organizations at every stage of their sustainability journey. The leadership and dedication shown by USTOA continue to raise the bar for what our industry can and should aspire to. Here’s to continuing the journey — together.”

The SIR community displays the USTOA community’s strength so beautifully, as there is a deep understanding that the stronger our bonds as an association, the further we will go individually and as an industry. We leave each summit with stronger member to member connections, a deeper appreciation for our destination host, a long list of practices to implement within our organizations, and a renewed sense of responsibility for driving change. It’s almost as if the summit is our annual opportunity to take a step back from the responsible tourism “puzzle”, listen to our fellow member’s challenges, and rearrange the pieces to discover something that positively impacts travelers, tour operators, the value chain, and most importantly, the people who call the beautiful destinations home. None of this would be possible without the honesty, transparency, and storytelling of those throughout our industry. Anchorage reminded us that the future of tourism depends on collaboration, transparency, and a willingness to learn from one another. As destinations around the world grapple with growth, climate challenges, and changing traveler expectations, the conversations happening in Alaska offer valuable lessons for us all.

Turtles, Trash, and the Power of Responsible Travel

By Melissa Snape

Two young men crouch over a blue bucket, kneeling in the sand on a beach in Kilifi, Kenya. The sun is setting behind them, and the air is hazy with mist rolling in on the tide. They look inside the bucket and smile at one another.

The bucket is full of sea turtle eggs.

Salim and Baraka are Turtle Rangers with Ocean Sole, and those eggs are about to be carefully relocated to a safer nesting area protected from predators, rising tides, and poachers. It’s a small moment, but it says a lot about the work they’re doing and why it matters.

It’s also exactly the kind of impact Collette aims to support through responsible travel. Because responsible travel is at the core of how we operate, we partner with organizations that are creating real, lasting impact in the destinations we visit, and Ocean Sole is one of them.

While they’re mostly known for transforming ocean waste, like discarded flip-flops, into colorful works of art, Ocean Sole’s mission extends far beyond the workshop. Through their TurtleSafe Project, they protect endangered sea turtles along Kenya’s coast and create employment opportunities for local people in the process.

That connection between conservation and livelihoods is what makes the work stand out.

Collette supports this work through our Microgrant program, which provides funding to community organizations around the world. In 2025, we expanded the program with a $10,000 Impact Beyond Grant. Selected by votes from our employees, travelers, and partners, Ocean Sole was the recipient.

With that funding, they were able to hire three new Turtle Rangers, strengthening protection around key nesting sites and expanding economic opportunities for local community members. At least one of these rangers once relied on poaching for income. Today, they’re protecting the same species they once hunted.

That kind of impact isn’t possible in isolation. It’s the result of a partnership combining local knowledge with shared resources and a long-term commitment to doing things the right way. By working together, organizations like Ocean Sole and Collette can go further, supporting both conservation efforts and the communities connected to them. While much of that impact happens beyond what they see on tour, it’s all part of our broader commitment to investing in the communities and ecosystems tied to each destination.

“We have been helped so much by Collette. More rangers are hired now to protect sea turtles. At our landing site, when turtles come to nest, they are safe and sound.”

-Salim Karisa Dzengo, Turtle Ranger

Travelers on our Plains of Africa tour visit Ocean Sole’s headquarters in Nairobi as part of an Impact Moment: an on-tour experience designed to give back to local communities. Here, they learn about Ocean Sole’s work and how it connects to conservation efforts on the coast.  For some, it’s a highlight of the journey.

“My favorite moment on tour? Visiting Ocean Sole.”  – Traveler Rita T.

Back on the beach in Kilifi, Salim and Baraka finish securing the eggs, preparing to move them to safety. For them, that blue bucket represents a job, skill, and a way to protect their coastline for generations to come.

For us, the bucket is a testament to the power of responsible travel, one that will help shape the ecosystem in coastal Kenya for years to come, and a reminder of the role we can all play in setting a higher standard for how travel supports communities and conservation.

How to Choose a Sustainable Hotel: Lessons from Maui

By Classic Vacations

In Maui, sustainability isn’t just a philosophy — it’s a promise. Standing on the golden sands of Kā‘anapali, with trade winds carrying the scent of plumeria and the sound of waves meeting the shore, it’s easy to see why protecting this paradise matters. For travelers, the question is no longer should we travel sustainably, but how.

Classic Vacations recently gathered travel advisors from across the country for its annual E3: Elite. Education. Experience. event — this time, with a powerful new focus on sustainability. In partnership with the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) and California State University Monterey Bay’s Sustainable Hospitality & Tourism Management program, advisors came together at The Westin Maui Resort & Spa, Kā‘anapali to earn their GSTC certification and deepen their understanding of responsible travel.

Learning What Sustainability Looks Like in Action

The training, led by Dr. Paige Viren of CSUMB, went beyond classroom discussions. Advisors explored how tourism can protect, rather than deplete, the destinations we love — from conserving energy and water to ensuring tourism dollars stay within the community.

Through guided learning, they discovered that sustainability isn’t a checklist. It’s a mindset. It’s about asking better questions: Who benefits from my stay? How does this hotel support its environment and people? Does this property reflect the culture it represents?

Royal Lahaina Resort, Photo credit: Classic Vacations

Seeing Sustainable Hospitality Firsthand

To bring those lessons to life, advisors toured two of Classic Vacations’ preferred partners — the Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa and the Royal Lahaina Resort — both recognized for their sustainability leadership.

At the Sheraton Maui, the group learned how the resort collaborates with more than 80 local businesses, ensuring that everything from food to furnishings supports Maui’s economy. Guests can also experience Hawaiian culture through culinary programs that highlight indigenous ingredients and through educational experiences like coconut weaving and storytelling with local artisans.

Nearby, the Royal Lahaina Resort shared how its teams weave cultural heritage into daily operations — from employing local staff and sourcing island-grown produce to hosting community-led events that celebrate Hawaiian traditions. Each initiative demonstrated that sustainability and authenticity are deeply intertwined.

Photo credit: John Bell, courtesy of Classic Vacations

Why Responsible Travel in Maui Matters

For Maui, tourism is more than an industry — it’s a lifeline. Supporting responsible tourism means helping the community, culture, and environment recover and thrive together. The island’s recent challenges have underscored how vital it is to ensure that every visit gives back more than it takes.

When travelers choose hotels that honor local culture, employ local residents, and invest in conservation, they become part of that recovery. For the advisors who attended the training, the experience reinforced a shared perspective: sustainable travel isn’t just about where clients stay, but about the impact those choices make on destinations and communities.

Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa, Photo credit: Classic Vacations

How to Identify a Sustainable Hotel

You don’t need to be an expert to make responsible choices. A few simple steps can make a meaningful difference:

Look for certifications. Programs like GSTC, Green Key, or EarthCheck signal verified sustainability standards.

Read beyond the amenities. A transparent sustainability page that outlines local hiring, waste reduction, or community initiatives is a good sign.

Notice how culture is represented. Hotels that authentically incorporate local traditions — in cuisine, design, and programming — are often those most committed to respectful tourism.

Sustainability is ultimately about connection: connecting travelers to place, culture, and purpose.

Regenerative Tourism: Smart Strategies to Ease Overtourism and Elevate Every Journey

By Gina Bang, Chief Sales and Marketing Officer of Avanti Destinations

It’s hard to read about travel today without encountering the word overtourism. From overcrowded streets in historic cities to visitor taxes and cruise restrictions, the challenges are real. Popular destinations are struggling under the weight of too many visitors, while travelers themselves face long lines, higher prices, and experiences that feel anything but authentic.

The Belize Barrier Reef is the largest in the northern hemisphere, and renowned as one of the best in the world, making it an ideal winter vacation destination for snorkelers and scuba divers.
The good news? With the right strategies, travel advisors can guide clients toward vacations that are more rewarding and help reduce strain on the world’s most beloved places. This is where regenerative tourism comes in: travel that not only minimizes impact, but actively benefits communities, preserves cultures, and restores ecosystems—all while creating more memorable journeys.

For those who want to embrace winter weather, consider vacationing in Finland’s Lapland where you can chase the Northern Lights, go dog-sledding or reindeer-sledding, followed by an authentic sauna. Photo credit: Avanti Destinations

Here are four practical ways to put it into action:

1. Rethink the Calendar: Travel in the Off-Season

Most Americans head abroad in summer, spring, and early fall. But from November to March (outside the holidays), even iconic destinations feel less crowded. The perks? Shorter lines, friendlier prices, and a richer cultural vibe.

Europe: enjoy opera, theater, and festivals in vibrant cities; ski in Austria or Switzerland; or chase the Northern Lights in Scandinavia.

Southern Europe: explore Spain, Portugal, or Italy in cooler but comfortable weather.

Warmer latitudes: trade winter coats for beaches in Southeast Asia, wildlife adventures in Central and South America, or desert treks in Morocco and Jordan.

Shifting the travel calendar also reveals a more intimate, authentic side of destinations.

The Dolomite region in northeastern Italy is another less-touristed region, known for its dramatic, breathtaking mountain scenery and hiking and trekking opportunities. Photo credit: Avanti Destinations

2. Go Beyond the Capitals

Paris, London, Rome, Madrid—spectacular, yes, but only part of the story. Beyond the capitals lie towns and regions that are equally rich in culture, cuisine, and scenery—yet far less crowded.

France: Lyon’s gastronomy, Strasbourg’s history, Avignon’s charm.

Italy: Bologna’s trattorias, the Dolomites’ alpine trails, Sardinia’s island escapes.

Spain: Toledo’s medieval streets, Granada’s Moorish wonders, Valencia’s futuristic design.

The UK: Cornwall’s coast, the Lake District’s landscapes, the Hebrides’ rugged beauty.

These places welcome visitors eager to experience traditions and lifestyles that often get overshadowed by capitals and most visited destinations.

Colorful markets, like Hoi An central market in Vietnam, can be explored on your own schedule when you travel independently. Photo credit: Avanti Destinations

3. Choose Independence Over the Herd

Cruises and large group tours funnel hundreds of visitors into the same sites at once. Independent travel (FIT) is the antidote. With guidance from a skilled advisor and a trusted FIT operator, travelers can design journeys that are personal, flexible, and freeing.

Prefer a quiet cathedral at dawn? Or a lively market at midday?

Independent travel lets you choose your rhythm. It allows time for cooking classes, wine tasting, or cycling ancient backroads—whatever fuels your curiosity. Instead of checking boxes, you create a journey shaped by your interests and pace.

Switzerland’s efficient trains, including its scenic routes, are not only convenient and relaxing, but also the most sustainable mode of transportation. Photo credit: Avanti Destinations

4. Support Local, Travel Sustainably

Regenerative tourism isn’t just about where you go, but how. Choosing suppliers who prioritize sustainability and community creates ripple effects of positive change:

Stay in boutique or locally owned properties instead of big chains.

Hire local guides and drivers who bring authentic insight.

Opt for walking or cycling tours that connect you more deeply with neighborhoods.

Travel by train whenever possible for a greener, more scenic and relaxing journey.

These choices don’t just reduce impact; they add richness and connection to the experience.

About Avanti Destinations:

THE JOY OF THE JOURNEY: WHY TRAIN TRAVEL IS THE ULTIMATE WAY TO GET MORE OUT OF YOUR ADVENTURE

From bullet trains to bunk beds, rail travel is a truly immersive experience

By: Yves Marceau, VP of product for G Adventures

When traveling, it’s all too easy to skip from one destination to the next, without really appreciating what we see along the way. “It’s not the destination, it’s the journey,” is a phrase we’ve all heard. At G Adventures, we believe it’s both. That’s why we recently launched our Rail Collection – 60 joyful train journeys across 20 countries that help travelers to travel flexibly and responsibly, while also offering true cultural immersion in a destination.

There are so many reasons why train travel is increasingly important for a community tourism-focused operator like ours, allowing you to get more out of your adventure. Here are just some of them.

It encourages you to slow down

In a literal sense, opting for a train journey instead of a flight is a slower form of travel. Even G Adventures’ Rail Collection trips in Japan, which include journeys on the famous bullet train, are slow compared to air travel. But importantly, traveling by train also encourages you to slow down, too. What you may feel like you are ‘losing’ in time, you are gaining elsewhere – leaving the pace of the journey to someone is freeing, and the hypnotic trundle on a train can do wonders for helping your mind slow, something that can be increasingly hard to do in a fast-paced world.

It can be a more immersive experience

Major airports across the world have a tendency to look, feel, smell and sound the same. Train journeys do not. A train trip fully immerses you in the destination and doesn’t let you bypass local life on the ground. Whether it’s what you’re seeing out the window, from miles of countryside to rarely-seen villages, to what you’re smelling on board, or what you’re eating along the way. And while airports go big on global food chains when it comes to eating options, at train stations, particularly smaller ones out of bigger cities, you’re more likely to find smaller independent cafes and food sellers, giving you the chance to try more local dishes – and put traveler dollars directly into the pocket of locals.

Big picture benefits

Using public rail transportation not only helps infuse money into communities that wouldn’t usually benefit from tourism income, but also helps keep commuter rail travel funded and more affordable for locals. It’s a simple yet great example of how tourism can be a force for good, and benefit communities on a much more local level in the easiest of ways.

It encourages new connections

Chances are you’ve taken a seat on a train and spent the journey sitting opposite someone. It’s impossible – certainly with the longer train journeys G Adventures features in its Rail Collection – to not interact with the people around you. Some of our favorite Rail Collection trips feature day-long journeys across India, where your local travel companions start out as strangers, but soon become acquaintances with stories to tell, giving a unique and powerful insight into life on unhurried journeys. And how could you possibly share a bunk cabin on a sleeper train in Vietnam without a spontaneous conversation – or long game of cards – with your new cabin mates? Authentic interactions like these are the memories we take away from trips abroad – and they’re often the stories that we tell, too.

It’s a true adventure

Ever seen a toddler or group of kids gleefully smiling at a train passing by? Trains have been synonymous with adventure since we were kids. And as adults, what’s one person’s commuter train is another person’s adventure. It may look like a train ride through the bucolic Italian countryside, it may be a night rocking to sleep on the top bunk of a train journeying across Japan, or it may be a bullet train whizzing at the speed of light (almost) from Shanghai to Berlin. It’s a meaningful way to see the world – a journey to be celebrated, not endured.

Brazil: A beacon of sustainable tourism for the future

By VisitBrasil

Brazil, with its vibrant landscapes and rich cultural tapestry, stands at the forefront of sustainable tourism. As sustainability evolves from not just a value but a necessity in travel, Brazil offers a compelling case study in how tourism can be both enriching and environmentally responsible. From the Amazon to the coast, it invites travelers to explore wild landscapes, layered stories, and resilient communities, proving that tourism and nature can not only coexist but also benefit from each other.

The Pantanal: A biodiversity heaven

Imagine yourself exploring the Pantanal, the world’s largest tropical wetland where biodiversity flourishes in every corner, and yet remains one of South America’s best-kept secrets. This UNESCO World Heritage site, listed by TIME magazine as one of the world’s 50 extraordinary places, is home to thousands of species, including capybaras, jaguars, and unique birds like the hyacinth macaw. The Pantanal is a crucial habitat that reminds us of the delicate balance we must maintain with nature and a living example of what happens when tourism supports both a place and its people.

A growing number of travelers are choosing to stay on ranches deep within the region. Reaching them is an adventure via dirt roads or light aircraft, but once there the immersion begins.

At these “fazendas”, days begin with the traditional quebra-torto (a hearty ranch-style breakfast) and unfold into horseback rides with local cowboys, nature walks with researchers, and evenings under starlit skies far from city light.

One of the most popular activities is the photo safari, where guests explore the wetlands by 4×4 pickups alongside expert guides. These experiences are designed to minimize wildlife interference, allowing visitors to observe animals in their natural habitat. Here, conservation and tourism are not just compatible; they’re mutually reinforcing.

These are glimpses into a way of life shaped by resilience and reverence for the land. Peões (local cowboys) demonstrate their skilled cattle handling. Scientists from international institutions quietly track endangered species like the giant anteater and tapir, inviting guests to witness conservation science in action. This is tourism that regenerates: funding research, preserving culture, and creating local income. It shows how conservation and tourism, when aligned, can benefit both people and the planet.

Foz do Iguaçu: Nature’s Power Unleashed

Then there’s Foz do Iguaçu, home to one of the world’s most stunning natural spectacles: the Iguaçu Falls. A UNESCO site set within protected Atlantic Forest, the park is home to over 400 bird species, monkeys, orchids, and even jaguars.

To feel its true power, one must go beyond the overlook. The Macuco Safari invites travelers to explore deeper: a ride through the forest in electric carts, a short hike along shaded trails, and finally, a boat ride to the base of the falls. For the adventurous ones, the boat enters the spray; for others, a drier route delivers the same wonder from a distance.

More than adrenaline, the experience promotes connection. Local guides share knowledge about flora, fauna, and the cultural importance of the falls to Indigenous communities. The tour follows strict environmental regulations, ensuring that the impact is low and the learning is high.

Supporting such experiences helps conserve the forest and empowers those who protect it, ensuring this wonder endures for generations.

Rio de Janeiro: Where Culture and Nature Intertwine

And we can’t forget the vibrant culture and natural beauty of Rio de Janeiro. From the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue to the lush greenery of Tijuca National Park, Rio embodies a unique blend of urban life and nature. The city is a melting pot of cultures, and sustainable tourism here encourages visitors to engage with local communities in meaningful ways.

One important aspect of sustainable tourism in Rio is Black heritage tourism, which celebrates the rich history and contributions of Afro-Brazilian culture. A standout experience is the Feel Brasil Little Africa tour, which takes visitors through the historic “Little Africa” district, an area deeply connected to Brazil’s African diaspora. Through guided storytelling and immersive visits to landmarks such as Pedra do Sal, Cais do Valongo (a UNESCO World Heritage site), and local art galleries, travelers gain a deeper understanding of the resilience and cultural legacy of Afro-Brazilians.

In addition to Little Africa, exploring neighborhoods like Santa Teresa and visiting cultural institutions offers further opportunities to learn about the historical significance of the African presence in Brazil. Supporting local artisans, musicians, and chefs along these routes not only enriches the travel experience but also fosters a sense of responsibility towards preserving these cultural treasures.

This type of cultural engagement promotes a more inclusive narrative about Brazil’s history, highlighting the importance of understanding and respecting diverse backgrounds. By participating in Black heritage tourism experiences like Feel Brasil Little Africa, visitors contribute to the empowerment of local communities, ensuring that their stories are told, honored, and celebrated.

Toward a thoughtful way to travel

In Brazil, nature and culture don’t just coexist, they shape one another. Whether you’re riding through the wetlands of the Pantanal, tracing forest paths to the foot of Iguaçu Falls, or walking the hills of Rio de Janeiro where samba echoes and stories of Afro-Brazilian heritage unfold, each encounter reveals something deeper. The country’s diverse ecosystems and rich cultural heritage remind us that nature and humanity are interconnected.

These are not destinations built for mass tourism, but living places shaped by rhythm, resilience, and memory. Sustainability here lives in the hands of local guides, in community pride, and in the quiet commitment to protect what matters. Every traveler has the power to make a difference, and by choosing sustainable options, we can support the preservation of our planet.

In conclusion, Brazil serves as a compelling case study in how tourism can foster environmental and cultural sustainability. By embracing responsible tourism practices, we can protect the beauty of our world while enriching our own lives through meaningful experiences. Let’s champion sustainable tourism together and ensure that the wonders of Brazil are preserved for generations to come.

Embracing Community as You Travel: Ways to ethically connect with culture and community

By: Jennifer Castle, Pleasant Holidays

A recent American Express global travel trends report showcased that the new generation of jetsetters are looking to prioritize the connection and wellbeing of local communities as they travel. A few ways this can be achieved are by supporting local businesses, using public transportation, volunteering, or by simply giving yourself more time within each destination. Because the sustainable approach is such a driving force in tourism today, we thought it might be best to break it down further, to discover what more can be done to build up community-based tourism and connect with the cultures we seek to explore.

Research Before You Go

Attention is often paid to flights and accommodation, so the history and sustainable efforts of a neighborhood can sometimes be overlooked. One way to ensure it isn’t, is to lay out your itinerary ahead of time. Draft a timeline that reflects your values for the community. Consider what time of year you’ll visit. This will help combat crowds, overtourism, and environmental damage that a peak travel season can bring. Find out if your accommodations have sustainable policies or practices, such as a refillable water station or recycling program, and include them in your travel routine. Engaging in these eco-friendly policies can help to reduce your carbon footprint.

Learn a few key words or phrases, to help bridge the communication gap. “Hello,” “please,” and “thank you,” can go a long way. If you’ve decided to volunteer, be sure to investigate a few organizations. Look into who founded it, how long it’s been running, and where the aid primarily goes.  The answers to these questions will ultimately help you decide which fits your moral compass best.

Travel Sustainably

Water conservation, energy-efficient lighting, waste reduction, local organic food, or eco-friendly transportation, are just a few ways the hospitality industry has chosen to lower its carbon footprint. So, it’s now easier than ever for guests to maintain a strong sustainable travel plan. For example, if the hotel provides refillable water sources, be sure to pack a reusable water bottle. If public transportation is nearby, make it your primary means of getting around. Eat at local mom and pop shops rather than corporate chains. Go for the environmentally friendly sunscreen or bug sprays over those with several chemicals or aerosols, keeping oceans and freshwater ecosystems (which at times can be a community’s primary source of drinking water), safe from any toxins.

Another step towards sustainability is how we engage with wildlife tourist attractions. According to the Wildlife Conservation Research Unit (WildCRU), “up to 4 million tourists who visit non-zoo tourist attractions involving wildlife are likely to be contributing to large-scale animal welfare abuses and are typically unaware of their impacts.” This is another reason why prior research is so important.

Mindful Towards Culture

Slow down and take time with your travel by giving yourself a few days in each location. Get outside and connect with the local landscape. Find time to travel alone or try taking a cultural tour or class. Ask questions and challenge yourself to meet new people. Use the notes from prior research to abide by any laws, traditions, or social norms that come up for the area. Taking a few of these steps can bring richer connections and cultural exchanges throughout your stay.

Support Local Economies

Put your money where the culture is and invest in activities that connect you with the local environment. Visit monthly events (such as Pride), music festivals, or art shows. Plan a picnic in the park, using unique foods collected from the neighborhood market. Explore local shops, restaurants, and classes. Travel with locals by booking tours that involve the community. Overall, support small business, especially those led by women and minorities. Supporting the local economy is also a great way to ensure that your loved ones will be receiving unique and special souvenirs.

Be sure to give those small businesses a shout-out on social media. Take photos and share the <s>s</s>tories but then tag the local businesses involved, to continue encouraging and inspiring community-based tourism.

Your travel choices have a significant impact on the community. Small changes can go a long way. It begins with respect and an open mind for the culture, the history, and the traditions that attracted you in the first place.

Have you heard of Pancit, Lumpia, Adobo, and Sisig? These delectable dishes might have graced your social media feed or found their way to your plate at a Filipino restaurant. Yet, the Philippines is teeming with countless local dishes and beverages waiting to be discovered. After visiting countries other than the Philippines, I always crave for the famous Sinigang and Bulalo—both featured on the 2024 World’s Top 100 Soups. The rich flavors and the dedication that goes into these dishes truly warm the soul.

If this has ignited your craving for Filipino cuisine, let’s explore some exciting developments and new experiences in the Philippine food and gastronomy scene.

Sustainability in Philippine Food and Gastronomy Tourism

At the Philippine Department of Tourism, we are committed to promoting experiences that are not only delicious but also beneficial for the environment and the tourism industry as a whole. Under the National Tourism Development Plan (NTDP) 2023-2028, which serves as the blueprint of the industry under the administration of President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr., the Philippines is envisioned to become a “tourism powerhouse in Asia”, with tourism initiatives shifting to a whole-of-government approach and investing in long-term sustainability reforms.

Resilience, equality, and sustainability serve as our anchors in building deeper experiences for travelers. As global sustainability efforts gain momentum, the DOT under the leadership of Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco, is embracing this trend in enhancing further our sustainability initiatives. This shift is particularly evident in our development of Farm, Food and Gastronomy, and Cultural tourism experiences, where we work closely with our partners in both government and private sector in highlighting sustainable practices that are creating opportunities for local producers, communities, and visitors alike.

Thanks to the leadership of Secretary Frasco and the collaborative efforts of both public and private sectors, gastronomy tourism has blossomed into one of the most vibrant aspects of our tourism landscape. Last June, we took a bold step in showcasing this richness when the Philippines hosted the very first United Nations (UN) Tourism Regional Forum on Gastronomy Tourism for Asia and the Pacific where over 600 delegates from 43 countries were treated to a culinary journey, discovering the diverse and delightful tastes that define the Philippines.

It was an unforgettable event: from the far north to the south of the Philippines, chefs from every region came together, each bringing their own unique flavors to the table.

New Experiences to Enhance Your Philippine Food and Gastronomy Journey

1. Slow Food Community Experiences

The Philippines takes pride in its growing network of Slow Food Communities. By adopting the philosophy of good, clean, and fair food—freshly prepared with care—we create a deeper connection between people and their food. Guests from around the world can engage in cultural immersion and gain insights into local communities’ ways of life.

Don’t miss the Coffee Trail in Murcia, Negros Occidental, home to a Slow Food Coffee Coalition. This passionate group of farmers, entrepreneurs, and enthusiasts is dedicated to making coffee a sustainable force for good, benefiting both the environment and the communities that cultivate it. Renowned for its coffee-shaded farms, Murcia offers three trekking options tailored to different skill levels for an engaging experience:

Easy: Elevation of 470 meters, exploring the backyard coffee farm of the Cañete Family

Moderate: Elevation of 600 meters, involving a 1 hour and 45-minute walk

Advanced: Elevation of 970 meters, requiring a trek of 2.5 to 3.5 hours

Regardless of your chosen trek, you’ll learn about the region’s history, the Slow Food Coffee Coalition’s mission, and engage in hands-on activities like coffee pruning and dehulling. You may also participate in preparing a delicious lunch using seasonal, locally sourced ingredients.

Additional Slow Food experiences can also be found in the Cordillera Administrative Region, with slow food communities and activities being part of the culinary tours. More slow food offerings from across the country is anticipated as we host the Terra Madre Asia and the Pacific in 2025 in Bacolod City, Negros Occidental, which has now become the official hub of Slow Food in Asia Pacific!

2. Market Tours (Public Market Tours)

The Philippines is home to vibrant public markets known as “palengke(s),” serving as essential hubs for families and communities. These markets offer a rich array of goods—from fresh farm produce, fishes and meats to dry goods and lifestyle products. Filipinos frequent the palengke not just for shopping but for the communal experience they provide. It’s a space where locals gather to share stories and enjoy traditional snacks like suman (elongated rice cake), tsokolate (hot chocolate), puto (steamed rice cake), and kakanin (glutinous rice cakes).

Recognizing their cultural significance, palengke(s) are now becoming exciting tourist attractions. Visitors gain authentic insights into Filipino life, observing community interactions and discovering cherished local goods. Locals act as cultural ambassadors, enriching the visitor experience by sharing stories about these marketplaces.

The introduction of “Palengke Tourism” not only bolsters the tourism industry but also promotes sustainability and creates new opportunities for local communities. When visiting the Philippines, you may explore iconic markets such as the Farmer’s Market in Cubao, Quezon City, and the Baguio Market in the Cordilleras. You may engage in hands-on activities like making lumpia wrappers, extracting coconut milk (“paggagata ng niyog”), and many more!

3. Philippine Experience Tours
