USTOA SIR Education Series - Co-Creating Indigenous Immersions in Panama

Event Details

Wednesday, February 12, 2025
2:00pm to 3:00pm ET

Join us for this edition of the SIR Education Series exploring indigenous imersions in Panama. This session delves into how OGAYA has partnered with local indigenous communities to co-create immersive, regenerative travel experiences. These collaborations are designed to preserve cultural heritage while providing sustainable economic opportunities.
Through respectful co-creation, travelers gain a deeper understanding of indigenous knowledge systems, traditions, and connection to nature, fostering mutual respect and appreciation. The session will explore the processes of free, prior, and informed consent, as well as internal approval from the indigenous community's formal structures, portraying the challenges, and successes of these partnerships, emphasizing the importance of community-led development and tourism that contributes to both cultural preservation and environmental stewardship.

This presentation will highlight how sustainability in travel must go beyond environmental impact to include cultural sustainability and the empowerment of local communities.
